The first and last time I took the local trainwas to Papar more than 20 years ago for a school trip. I don’t remember muchfrom that experience except for the uncomfortable seats and the tunnel.

There is something about tunnels that excitesme till this very day.

Some historical facts on the railway system inSabah can be found here.

The North Borneo Railway (NBR) steam train rideis only available every Wednesday and Friday. The train departs from theTanjung Aru train station at about 10am.

When you reach the train station, get yourticket and your ‘train passport’ at the NBR Counter, opposite the entrance tothe train platform. Before you board thetrain, remember to get your ‘train passport’ stamped.

The atmosphere of the station is lively and funwith the music from the colonial era blasting over the speaker. The friendlytrain staff dressed in white and khaki uniforms complete with the pith helmetswelcomes you to board one of five the carriages.

As the train slowly departs from the station, acontinental breakfast of assorted pastries and croissant is served with coffeeor tea.

The view along the route changes as you pass byeach station. From the Kota Kinabalu International Airport to the Petagas WarMemorial, commercial centres to water villages and the glittering waters of theSouth China Sea to the delightful paddy fields.

One thing that doesn’t change though is thefriendly faces of the locals who eagerly waves at the passengers as the trainpass by. Even after riding the train many times, it doesn’t get old.

The first stop the steam train makes is at theKinarut Station. Passengers are encouraged to visit the small town of Kinarutor the Tien Shi Temple located nearby.

The second stop is at Papar station. Irecommend you to talk a short walk to the nearby market where you get to seethe colourful everyday lives of the locals. They are very friendly, helpful andalways ready to pose for the camera, if you ask them nicely. There are also handicrafts, food and fruitsfor you to buy as souvenirs.

Try and look for the local Sabahan offeringslike fruits: - Tarap, Bambangan, Durian, Rambutan. Snacks – Kuih Cincin, Kuih Lidah, Kuih Amplang,Penyeram.

Thirty minutes is not enough to see everythingbut it is sufficient to see a little bit of everything.

You could also stay at the train station and watch the head of the steam train making it's turn at the turntable to pull back the train back to KK.

On our back to the Tanjung Aru station, adelicious Tiffin lunch of Chicken Briyani Rice, vegetables, fish and satay withfresh fruits are served. For dessert, there is ice cream! What a joy it is toenjoy the ice cream onboard the steam train on a hot afternoon.

The view ispleasant and the experience of boarding a steam train older than my grandma isdefinitely one of its kind. I sit on the train and I forget about the rest ofthe world. The sound of the engine is surprisingly comforting. For real.

There are not many steam train left in this lifetime, be a part of this British Colonial history in Sabah.

To an almost7-year old, the world is simple.
Man meet woman. Fall in love. Get married. Have kids. Live happily ever after.

So when thingsdidn’t work out that way, they would innocently question the whys.

The day Idreaded arrived not so gracefully.
We were having our nightly ‘talk’ when he whispered to me.
“Mommy, who did you marry?”

My heartliterally sank.

“Why?” Iasked.

“People getmarried and have children. So since you gave birth to me, who did you marry?”

I, ClaraLim, actually pretended to sleep and ignored the question.

And becausehe is my son who inherited my stubbornness, he asked me the question again fewdays later. This time I distracted him with something on TV.

By now, Ican tell when he is about to jump into this topic. Like the other night. I quicklychange the topic when he suddenly starts talking about marriage and babies. Ihave never been more thankful for his short attention span.

For a boy his age, he is sure thinking about this a great deal.

I had 7years to think about this and yet I have come up with no solution. Maybe I shoulduse the ‘seed story’ like in the movie, The Switch.

Either way,I need to come up with a solution quick.

I was theChristmas grouch and paid my Karma during the New Year.

So thisyear, I promise to be nicer during the holidays.

Ekielstarted his Year One with much excitement. By 2^nd day of class, hewas determined not to go to school. Ever. It was really difficult to convincehim that education is the best thing I can give him.

He even wentall ‘reverse psychology’ on me.
“I don’t need anything else except you and my family mommy”.

“I miss youso much”.

“All I needis your love”.

Yes, such asweet talker that boy.

I do feelbad I don’t get to spend much time with him during the first few days ofschool. In fact on the first day, I had a function and was only able to sendhim to class and pick him up the first day. Second day onwards went downhillaccording to my mom.

One time, inbetween his sobs, he brought it up, about me not making time for him and whatnot. My heart breaks but I really had no choice. *sighs*

If this ishow the rest of the year will be like, I will lose my sanity in a couple of weeks.The only thing I am very certain at this point.

When everyone was talking about Ombak Rindu,I got REALLY curious and started searching for reviews and what not. With allthe glowing reviews I managed to convince the girls to watch the movie.

Let’s talk about the other cinema goersfirst.

You know it’s an adult love story. Why doyou bring your children with you is beyond me. It’s okay that your kid keepspoking me with her tiny hands from the back but when your kid starts to screamand you talk to the kid like you guys are watching TV at home, is a big NO-NO.

Hilang mood weii.

And when the ‘bedroom’ scene begins, don’tcomplain there are kids in the cinema.

Thethumbs up

Maya Karin (Izzah) was awesome. I like thefact that she dresses the way a real kampong girl would dressed. No fakeeyelashes and clown make-up like other dramas/movies. The frizzy hair, thetowel to cover her hair was nice details.

Aaron Aziz (Hariz) was yummilicious.

Is it just me or is Bront Palarea (Mail) lookingreally handsome in this movie?

Lisa Surihani (Mila) was great as usual.

The thumbs down

Mila’s makeup was too much. I know she issupposed to be a celebrity but her eye make-up makes her look as if she justgot punched in the eye.

Hariz’s mother’s makeup was over the top.I wonder how many can of spray hair their use.

Mail biting that paddy stalk or whateverit is was too… unnecessary. First time, was okay la. But again and again ondifferent scenes?

Too many ‘fade in & out’ (I have noidea what is the term for that editing) in between scenes.

There was a ‘romantic’ scene where Izzah& Hariz on the huge rocks by the beach, the moment died when someone walkedaimlessly at the back.

Censorship board failed. They missed out the word 'slut' or is that word acceptable now? Hee.

Despite the lovely speech about redha and pasrah speech, the scene where Izzah & Mila sitting at the pondok also died when Maya Karin’s audiothingy made an appearance. *sighs* Come one, no one from the production crewsaw that thing?

Maybe it’s just me. The movie is good nevertheless but I imagine thebook would be better kan?
I will update once I finished reading my sis' copy. That's her Christmas wish. Hee.

By the way, if you’re watching the movie, bring tissues. Lots oftissues.

Black. That was the theme colourof my wardrobe many moons ago. Black IS the colour for big sized girl like meno? To give the slimming 'illusion'?

But then, when I look at myself inthe mirror, I see a zombie so I added army / apple green to 'spice' things up.

Yes, I was not a colouradventerous at all.

Then one day, I woke up anddecided that I love baby pink. It is the total opposite of me, but hey, itmakes me feel so 'pwetty'. Hehehe.

When the whole orange fever hitalmost everyone in the country, I didn't understand the fascination. Not until Ibought an orange top because of the lack of colour choices and it kinda make myhalf-tanned skin glow. Happiness. Unfortunately, the colour screams forattention and I cannot deal with that.

I have always love Turquoise but Ido not dare to wear the colour until recently.

And now, I think I am having a midlife crisis. You know how middle-aged men buys flashy cars? I am so attractedto bright BRIGHT colours and it is scary.

I have bought few ‘loud’ pieces,but I have yet to wear most of them. I have no idea where to wear it anyway. Hehehe.

I know I look crazy to some, buthey, we have to have ‘confidence’ to look good in whatever we wear. Even whenwe have to fake ‘it’. That’s Fashion 101 no?

Peoplecommented that Ekiel’s name is too biblical.
I know it is, but I wanted a ‘wise’ name in hopes that he’ll grow up to be a manfull of wisdom.

I also love the meaning behind the name.

Ezekielmeans ‘Strength’ while Isaiah means ‘Salvation’.

Since bothare the names of the prophets, it is common to hear the names during mass and without fail thefamily would turn to look at Ekiel. I don’t know why. We just do.

We tellEkiel that the priest is not happy with him because he is not paying attentionto the service.

LastSaturday, the first reading was from Prophet Isaiah and true enough, everyone,the family, turned to look at him. He looked at me helplessly. After a while,he came to me and whispered in my ear “Mommy, he said Isaiah, not EzekielIsaiah so he is talking about someone else!”

No rainbows and no lemons. *sigh*I must have offended the Universe. Again.

I used to have enough patience foreveryone and everything, but lately I can feel myself losing it. FB wallsupdate about optimism and positive quotes irk me and cute-sy messages abouttheir love and life makes me want to bang my head on the computer keyboard.

I'm a sad case kan?

There's a point where I reallywant to punch a guy on his face. I would have if I were a guy. I know, fightingis not the solution. *head hangs in shame*

So what do I do when I amstressed? I eat. But with Christmas coming that is just not an option. So todistract myself, I shop. Online. Or make stupid 'spur of the moment' decision.

Which I would feel bad aboutlater.

Either or, things are just notworking out for me these days.

Thank goodness Christmas is justaround the corner. Something to distract myself. Managed to convince the familyto change the theme colour of the Christmas tree.

Inspired by Chegu Carol’s pink theme last year, we are doing purple/pink silver this year.
Would love to have a turquoise theme, but it is impossible to get the decors.

I am not exactly a football fan,but I do watch occasional football and by that it means watching it when mybrother is watching it at home. But when I do watch football, I get a littletoo excited and make comments like I know the game well.

It’s the adrenalin rush I tellyou.

So last night, with almosteveryone talking about the finals between Malaysia and Indonesia footballmatch, I have to watch it and support our national team no?

Coincidently I was wearing ayellow shirt and Ekiel was in red. The gambler inside of me made a wager withEkiel and he jumps right in.

He decided that if Malaysia wins,he will replace me at work today. How adorable is that? If Indonesia wins, Ihave to take him to the game arcade and let him play his heart out.

Of course, I opt for massage for 1 hour instead because thatboy can’t read so coming to do my work would be really useless.

When the Garuda scored their first goal, Ekiel turned intothis REALLY annoying monster.

He boo-ed me when the Harimau scored.

The whole game was a little off I feel. There were a lot of knockingeach other, a lot of drama with the *ahem* fake injury and it wasn’t the most gracefulgame ever. I cannot remember chuckling so much during a football match.

My dislike for surprises only made this game more nervewrecking especially the penalty bit.

So when the ball slowly rolled into the net, I was happy.Because we won. Well, because I won. The bet. In the midst of the cheering,Ekiel came to me and gave me a high five.

After the game, I told Ekiel that he better get ready as Iwould like to claim my prize.

Me: Habislarr you Ekiel, you have to give memassage

Ekiel: But mommy, we are one team already kan?

Me: Eh hello, you support Indonesian team right? They lostright?

Ekiel: But I am in your team already kan?

Me: Since when?

Ekiel and I had one of our ‘deep’ conversations the other night.

And it was rather painful.
There were tears and comforting hugs.

But what was said was true.

We need to make efforts to find love.

Ekiel gave me the ‘passion of love’ speech.

Ekiel: Mommy when you love someone you need to show it. Like youlove me, you bring me out, buy me things. Go dinner. That is the ‘passion oflove’.

Me: What if I don’t have thetime?

Ekiel: You don’t work ALL thetime. You still have cuti. You go outlarr.

Me: What if it doesn’t work out? How?

Ekiel: It is okay. It will hurt just a little. Like me and E. Whenwe broke up, I okay only. Even when K say E is his GF, I biasa only. That is life.

My youngest sister was so desperate for tickets; she actually calledthe Malay local radio station hoping to get some tickets.

I understand the fascination. Been there done that. I once waited outsidethe building of one of the local newspaper for hours for the tickets just towatch Jimmy Lam. I know, I know. Jimmy who right? All I can say is it was apretty weird phase for most of us.

I remember coming early to the KDCA where the concert was held and Iliterally fought to be right in front of the stage. When he touched my hand, Iwas so sure that I was special like the rest of the girls whose hand he touchedas he walked across the stage.

Those were definitely the days.

So when I see my sister trying hard to get the tickets, I feel sorryfor her so I tried asking around but no luck. However, thanks to twitter, Imanaged to figure out the location of the radio cruisers which she managed toget herself three tickets.

I don’t know what made her gave my son the other ticket. He got allexcited, ‘believing’ that he would go to the concert. When my mom told me mysister left with her friends and left my son at home with the ticket, I gotreally pissed. Only one ticket for Ekiel. Event in 1B. I don’t drive. What didshe expect to happen?

True enough when I got home, my son was excited to go and I had tobreak the bad news to him.

Ekiel: I hate C and her stupid dumb idea. I knew her plan would notwork!

After working for four continuous weekends, I finally gotthe weekend off. Sticking to my weekendtheme, “Save the Dugongs”, I spend my days sleeping and watching a lot of TV.

However, even with paid TV, there are still not many ‘interesting’programmes to watch. Desperate, I tune in to our locals programmes, because we ‘should’support our local entertainment industry no?

I was watching a little bit of a drama where a prostituteswho has two kids and she was diagnosed with AIDS. She was in the room allhysterical and a social worker tried to calm her down. There is nothing wrongwith the scene really except my brain keeps asking me, ‘is the social workergoing to a formal office function after this?’ She was dressed WAY too formal tomeet a prostitute in her dingy rented room.

Maybe it’s just me.

But remember the scene in the bath tub and the girl waswearing a pario? And the cardigan in ‘Akinabalu’? Something is so wrong with our wardrobedepartment!

It is also unfortunate that with the many fashion designerand self-acclaimed fashion guru in our country, the local celebrities looked asif they were dressed in the dark for a glitzy and glamorous affair like therecent AIM. *whistles*

I know Christmas is coming but to look like a colourful treeis not the way to celebrate the season.

Sometimes, less is indeed more.

school placement

Life was andwill continue to be a little hectic until further notice. The scary thing is, despitethe headaches, I kinda welcome the rush and madness. Takes my mind off certainthings. Things I rather not worry. For now.

So Ekiel’sprimary school placement is out. He did not get into Shan Tao as I wanted butinstead they placed him in a school I never heard of and it is located o-verrrthere where the traffic is crazy. I only realised it was a non-Chinese schoolafter I log in to their website.

Silly me.

How do theministry decide who goes where? I am pretty sure the parents of the girl whogot into an all-boy school must be thrilled.

I was toldto fill an appeal form and register with the ‘assigned’ school anyway. Just incase. *sighs* Some told me to go to the education department, and some told meit would be a waste of time as the department personnel is not so very helpfulAND they cannot move the students around without the school’s approval anyway.

As much as Ihate asking for favours, I made my dad made a phone call. I think I need tomake another phone call myself. Just in case. I am beginning to hate thatphrase.

It doesn’tmatter if the school is a smart school and what not. As a mother, I want what Ithink is best for Ekiel. And going to that school is not it. To learn theChinese language is also important to me because to know more than twolanguages puts you two steps ahead in front of others. This is why I insist hegoes to a Chinese school, but I am willing to compromise as long he gets to theschool I *ahem* approve.

I used tomake fun of parents who are so concern and particular about their children’seducation. This must be karma no?

My son brought home a souvenir book in conjunction with thekindergarten’s 75^th anniversary. In total, there were 3 photos of myson (1 individual and 2 group photos), 1 of us during the sports day and therest are pretty much crap - advertisements from sponsors and photos fromprevious events and what not.

Just say if I were to produce such book for work, I’d be jobless bynow.

But since it’s free, why should I complain.

So I thought.

Then my dad told me I have to fork out RM28 for the book.

WTH?

It’s not so much about the amount that I have to pay. I just disagreewith how the school is ‘forcing’ us to pay for everything; a minimum of 2tickets (RM50 a piece) per child for the graduation dinner, costumes for schoolperformances; donation for bazaar; photos where you can only see certain partof Ekiel, etc.

I think I belong somewhere in the middle of the lower income group andapart from the monthly school fees which increases every year, this is reallyinconvenient. I wonder how those with 3 children in the kindergarten (frompre-school to kindergarten year 2) do it?

I knowprices of things increases every year, but unlike most people, I only got an incrementafter 4 years and that is not much.

I alsounderstand that the school is in a bad shape. But seriously?

I have been collectingfunds for school building throughout my schooling life. It is okay that I don’tget to enjoy the new primary school building, but hey, after 16 years leavingthe secondary school, there is still no building nothing. Eh?

I was toldthat primary schools will not be easy too especially since I am so determinedto put him into a Chinese school. Well,we all want what is best for our child, so this is something that I and everyparent have to figure out.

The world has become a little scary and a sad the past few weeks. News ofabandoned babies, kids raping kids, a little girl got run over and no onecared... everything was a little too much for me to digest. And it iseverywhere. On print news, TV, online portals, television, twitter and heck, itis even on my FB wall. And every time I log in, I have to do my own version ofcensorship.

Iknow you want to share the news as a lesson/reminder to others, but I like mywall to be a happy place, thank you very much.

Ialso have enough headaches with my own reality.

Unfortunatelythere are people who feed off my unhappiness, and no matter what I do, I willnever win. So, I am becoming Oscar the Grouch, and I hate it.

But,despite all that, I am still thankful for everything and everyone.

I know it issilly but I do not what to do tomorrow. I want to go out and enjoy the greatbig outdoor, but when I think about the Sunday crowd and the unpredictableweather, the usual Sunday sleeping-in indulgence is more, appealing.

Maybe Ishould go karaoke with Ekiel.

But that’llbe a problem because he doesn’t know how to read, which means he’ll get boredand with his attention span of a monkey, he’ll want to leave. And if we don’tleave fast enough, he’ll start whining and becomes annoying.

He rather wedo anything water but his mommy does not want to get burn this weekend. Got afunction next weekend and I do not intend on going with my skin peelingmiserably. *whistles*

I try not to regret the things in the past.
Either with the things that I have done. Or didn’t do.

However, August broke not only my heart but my whole being.

It was something which was said during the eulogy that changed me.
The only thing is; I do not know what to do with this change.
I’ve tried embracing it, but I felt kinda silly especially when my good intentions are not understood.
And get really frustrated with the lack of response.

Didn’t know it would be this difficult to change an old habit.
Is this why people never change?

“It is sad that we, the family, are finally gathered all together but under this circumstance. And only during his days in the hospital, the children and the grandchildren would hold his hand, hold him, caresses him, to show our love and affection for him. Tell him how much we love him. But it is good that before he left this world, he knows how much he is loved.”

When he was transferred to QE, I make it a point to visit him whenever I can. Unfortunately I would just shake his hand and stood by the bed side. And get out from the ward with the “too many people” excuse. In all honesty, I was scared of the inevitable. I could not accept the fact that he was not the same man I am used to seeing. I didn’t know what to do. How to react. What to say. How do you comfort pain? How do you tell them everything will be fine when you know it won’t?

After two weeks of thinking and worrying, I finally broke down.

I regretted for not coming to my senses earlier.
I also regretted for always taking things for granted.
Like believing I have 20 more years before I have to go through this heartache.

So no more waiting and assuming I have all the time in the world.
I will no longer hesitate and will make more effort to show my affection and appreciation to the people I care and love. No more choosing over sleep than spending time with my families and friends.

It’s not going to be easy, but I will sure damn try.

Anyway, he finally went to a better place at his own time, and definitely after giving a good fight.

That afternoon when we “escorted” him back, I started cry-laughing as we turn into the junction to our kampong. The sun peeked through the gray clouds and it stayed that way until we got to the house. It’s touching because he hated the hospital and even planned his escape. All he wanted to do was to go home.

And finally he did.

Rest in peace Akong.
You are missed and remembered.

Niah Adventure

I have always wanted to visit the Niah Caves. I am not exactly the most adventurous person, but the idea of wondering into a “prehistorical world” is fascinating to me. The images of swallows, I think they are swallows, circling the sky with bats flying out of the caves and the way the sun rays dances in the cave is captivating.

Even Ekiel wants to visit the Niah Caves thanks to tourismmalaysia TVC.

But of course, not everything turns out the way you imagined it to be and this seems to be a permanent mantra of my life.

The journey to Niah is like an hour or so from Miri. I was hoping to see the cave the moment we arrived Niah, of course tough luck. We paid our RM10.00 entrance fee at the counter and walked to the jetty to take the boat.

When I heard boat, I was thrilled because I thought I would finally get to ride the “local” boats. We paid RM1 per person per ride and OMG I was so bumped not only because it was one of those ordinary boat, but also because the journey took less than 1 minute. We crossed over the Niah River and the hike to Niah Caves begins.

Oh, if you didn’t bring torchlight, you can rent one at the jetty counter. Yes, you will need torchlight considering you’re going inside a cave and preferably a bigger one because a small torchlight is not very useful. Especially when shared with three people.

There is an information centre by the jetty where you can find out everything you need to know about Niah.

The long breezy walk [of 3.5km] to the cave is pretty easy as you only need to follow the constructed walkway. Unfortunately, the cemented path was a little slippery with the wet leaves from the rain the night before. I did some acrobatic stunts which thankfully only the squirrels saw.

When I saw the “rest stop” I was pretty sure we were almost there. We were. Almost to the gate of the Niah Caves that is.

Now, considering I had no form of exercise except for fork and spoon lifting, I think I did the long walk pretty well. Until I see the staircases I have to climb. It wasn’t that bad really, but *ahem* baby elephants don’t do stairs well.

We arrived at the Trader’s Cave first. My camera could not capture the beauty of the place, and everything inside Niah Caves. And sadly my description will not do the place justice.

From the Trader’s Cave, we continued to climb the stairs to the Great Cave. Now the Great Cave is indeed great. It’s a HUGE opening with staircases that leads you to the different part of the cave. There are also several ‘ropes’ dangling from the top and I was told it was used to collect the bird’s nest.

I was puzzled at first to how they got the rope hanging from the top, but my friend said, they climbed over the cave and slot in the rope from the top. Either way, it is fascinating to imagine how bird’s nest collection was done then.

There are a couple more caves you could venture to. I am not sure which cave we went, but the sight were definitely magnificent. Again, torchlight is an essential piece of equipment for this adventure and we cut our journey short as it was difficult to see with one tiny headlamp.

For nature lovers, Niah Cave is a must. For those who are expecting something else, make plans to visit different parts of Miri. Hee.

I’m thinking Mulu Caves for my next trip. Anyone?

My 1st Gawai Experience

My Gawai experience was interestingly fun but unfortunately not as authentic as I’d like it to be. Pardon my ignorance but I imagine going to the long houses would involve boat rides or at least long hours of travelling.

I blame all the TourismMalaysia ads for that inaccurate perception.

Our ride to the long house was a comfortable less than an hour journey and it is located right by the main road. Yes, I was somewhat disappointed especially when this particular long house, like many others has ‘embraced’ the change of time.

Okay, I was extremely happy to see toilet facilities and electricity.

Like the original long house, Rumah Panjang Misson Timbak is made out of several houses. 23 of them. Or was it 22? Anyway it is considered small compared to other long houses. It is built on stilts and you are welcomed to the long ruai, somewhat like a hall, where the gatherings are held.

Our host, Tuai Rumah Misson Timbak invited us to his home, which looked pretty much like every other houses; living room, dining room, kitchen, washroom and two bedrooms upstairs.

We were there the eve of Gawai as the celebration begins at midnight (apparently in other long houses the celebration starts earlier). While waiting, we had some local delicacies and of course plenty to drink.

The Tuai Rumah prepared the Ai Pengayu, the local rice wine called tuak for long life in a tajau (a type of jar), a month before the celebration and kept it at the centre of the ruai, which is then covered with the a pyramid like set-up wrapped with Pua Kumbu. The Tuai Rumah will only open the jar and take the first drink before sharing it with the rest of the long house residences. It is said that if the tuak is sweet, they will prosper for the year, and of course if it is sour, it will be a tough one.

The residences played the gong and other instrument I am not familiar with. A few danced the ngajat, the traditional Iban warrior dance and one Bidayuh guy performed the Bidayuh traditional dance.

And, it is never a party, in Sabah and apparently in Sarawak as well, if no one sang their hearts out. Yes, people, it is karaoke time.

Few minutes before midnight Tuai Rumah wore his traditional Pua Kumbu vest and someone handed him a live chicken. I imagined it would be “messy” but Tuai Rumah handed the live chicken to another guy. The guy went out and came back with bloodied chicken feathers which the Tuai Rumah used to mark the “set-up”. He then opened the jar, took couple of sips of the tuak and nodded his head as a sign of approval.

Then everyone shared the tuak for good luck.

I had three glasses just to be sure. *Hee*

It is also customary to visit each of the houses at the long house where each house will serve lots of food and drinks. And like most custom, it is impolite to refuse what the host offered. It was an interesting 36 hours [non-stop] of eating, drinking and making new friends. By the end of my visit to the long house, I could have rolled myself back to Miri happily.

I was told this was a “modern” and simple celebration and there are long houses that still practice their full traditional custom.

I need to get myself invited to these long houses next year.

My Miri trip was absolutely fun.
I love Miri not only because my friends were there to show me the best of Miri, but because the food was super delicious and the people were great.

I took the everyonecanfly airlines and I was surprised when we had to climb the small staircase to get into the airport. Thankfully my luggage wasn’t that heavy but it was a hassle for those with children or even senior citizens. Why can’t they just use the “thingy” that connects to the plane is beyond me. They can include it in the airport tax like everything else they’ve included no?

There were long queues at the immigration counters and sadly, people in Miri do not queue up either.

Anyways, all irritation disappeared when I met my friends and they brought me to this place where I had one of the best noodles I have ever tasted. It was just a simple dish of noodles and meat, [maybe I was hungry] but the taste was OMG delicious. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what I had or where I had it. *head hangs in shame*

I enjoyed myself so much in this trip, I forgot about everything else.
Oh well. More reason to revisit Miri. If I get the *ahem* “green light” to go.

Fun fact: I thought I was imagining all those seahorses. They even have 1Malaysia seahorses. Well, sorta. It was by the roadside and I have no time to take a photo. So I had to ask and apparently, seahorses are the “mascot” of Miri.

Another fun fact: Grand Old Lady is not a lady but the first oil rig built in Miri overlooking the town and the South China Sea.

I also had the best ABC Cendol and Rojak. If I have no shame, I’d licked the Rojak plate clean.

Again, the only thing I remember about this location is it is very near the green gas station.

Ooh, and the guy who wore the exact same outfit as my friend.

The public parks in Miri are awesome. The one we visited was on a slope with suspension bridges to connect the several entries of the walkway. Below is the pool where children can dip in to cool off the afternoon heat. Kids were screaming their heads off in every direction but it was a family fun venue which Ekiel would love.

The beach parks are also great. I just find it weird to see families enjoying their “picnic” at 11pm.

Despite minor hiccups, I had a blast during the 11^th Sutera Harbour 7K Sunset Charity Run 2011.

The afternoon weather was superb but she went gloomy mode towards the evening. Everyone was worried when it drizzled for a bit. But I think that the Universe was just messing with us because the weather stayed cool and breezy the whole evening.

Bah, the Universe knows we are doing it for love and charity. So she cools off the afternoon heat for everyone larr.

The warming up session started at 4.50pm. Then at 5.17pm the Guest of Honor flagged everyone off.

I am happy to report that this year no one hurt themselves at the starting line. Few minutes later were the second flag off for the VIPs and children from the Sabah Special Olympics and Sabah Thalassaemia Society.

I tried to get the air horn can from one of the VIP but before I could catch up I was stalled by the other VIPs. I’m sorry but the sight of “him” running with the air horn can was hilarious.

And why were the VIPs holding the air horn cans if they were running?
Well it is one of those life’s mystery.

By 5.30pm or so, the first runner came back. He took some pictures, interviewed by the DJs and went for second round. Why? He has the stamina of a cheetah.

Here’s a recap of the 7K Carnival because I cannot remember everything that happened that night.

The first performance was by Malvin of Prince of Pop. The rest of the Prince was busy with their royal duties. *hee*

Next was Fanzi, the boy with the big voice. When I first heard him sing during our sound check, I was like *melted*. I so want to hear him sing “Lelaki Ini” by Anuar Zain because he has the voice for it. He is such a sweetie.

The Ariez was superb. I love it when the guitarist was jumping up and down and the lead singer jumped off the stage. *woohoo* Too bad the crowd sangat-sangat larr bersopan santun. The band members pun sangat-sangat bersopan santun juga. I also like the fact that they are punctual and very patient.

My favorite for the night was Soulmates. I have always a thing for acapella performances.

Nubhan was good. I love his voice.

Candy was “interesting”.

Adam and the VIP were entertaining.
All the young girls went gaga over them including the three Korean girls.

At one point I was “stuck” in front of the table where Adam and VIP were seating for their “Meet & Greet Fan” session. Pusing-pusing me cari place to escape and finally I have to yell at the girls to give me way. *tsk tsk tsk*

Anyway, despite the FOREVER “on my way”, all artistes turned up this year. *wipes forehead with relief*

Too bad I don’t have videos from their performances that night.

However, I have something better. Soulmates and Fanzi sang “Lelaki Ini” during our dinner after the 7K Run. *melts*

I think I still have one more entry on the street food at Krabi, but that would have to wait as I am now going all 7K.

If you haven’t heard, the Sutera Harbour 7K Sunset Charity Run is happening on Saturday, 16^th July 2011 from the Covered Tennis Court, Sutera Harbour Marina, Golf & Country Club towards The Magellan Sutera Resort, u-turn to the Coastal Highway towards Wawasan Plaza and at the roundabout, turn back to the Covered Tennis Court, Sutera Harbour Marina, Golf & Country Club.

Yes, that’s 7 kilometer.
And no, I have not ~~run~~ walked the 7K.
I am on duty that day. *whistles*
But if my son can do it, so can you.

Since this is a fun charity Run, there is no prize for the first runner to come back, though they do come back super fast; it’s crazy. However, to share the love, runners who complete the 7K within 77 minutes, will get a shot at the FANTASTIC lucky draw prizes. There are 300 hundred lucky draw prizes to be won with 5 Grand Lucky Draw prizes to be drawn during the 7K Carnival. Last year’s main prize was worth RM5,000.00.

This lucky draw prizes are contributed by generous sponsorship from corporate organizations and generous individuals. Of course the lucky draw prizes were sourced by the 7K Committee.

Nothing is easy you know. Letters to be typed out, printed, delivered and follow up. Then the prizes are picked up, marked and distributed during the event. You know how crazy it is to distribute 300 lucky draw prizes among thousands of runners?

In the 7K Carnival, there’ll be food and drinks for sale. However, the 7K Carnival stalls will only accept the 7K Coupons which is available for sale at RM10.00 per booklet. And each booklet, entitles you to one shot at the 300 lucky draws as well.

The nett proceeds from these stalls will also be donated to the 7K Beneficiaries.

If you read the papers, you will see the 7K photos of group of runners who have registered for the Run. This is where a team of one driver, one photographer and myself goes around town and out to deliver the t-shirts to those supportive people.

Our day usually starts around 8.30am and we come back to the office around 5.00pm. On a busy day, we’ll have about 13 deliveries to make, so we would have additional teams on the go as we could not be at three different places at the same time. We really wish we could!

By the time we come back to the office, we still have our usual tasks to finish up. Yes, it’s tiring. But I don’t get to do as much charity work as I’d like to. Yes, me and my 1001 excuses. So, when events like this happens, I’d gladly pitch in and try not to b**** about those people who is not making life any easier. That’s life. I’ll deal with it.

The 7K t-shirt has run out. Uh huh, all 10,000 pieces. *claps hands* Due to the demand and requests, we are replacing the t-shirts with caps. Why caps? It’s faster to get them printed than t-shirts.

So if you have not gotten yourself registered for the Run, come over to Sutera Harbour Marina & Country Club. Fees are RM25 for adults, RM15 for children.

Oh, since the traffic will be super crazy, do come earlier. It’s advisable to look for parking outside the Resort, because by 3pm, there will be LIMITED number of parkings available. Try to be at the Covered Tennis Court before 5pm as the warming up session will start. Flag off is at 5.17pm.

Why 5.17? Well 5.17pm = 17:17.
We just love our 7s.

Krabi ep5

For some reason, we were psyched when we saw the elephant ride packages in Krabi. We went back to the same tour operator for the packages because we were too lazy to scout around.

There are few packages you can choose from. One full day, half day, one hour and it also includes jungle trekking, waterfall visit and everything else I do not remember. We opt for the simplest one; 1 hour elephant ride (or was it 2) because we plan to spend the rest of the day lazing by the beach.

They brought us to Nosey Parker’s Elephant Camp about 20 minutes from Ao Nang. Now, I cannot remember how many elephants were there but I remember there was only one male elephant in the camp and he was too old to reproduce.

Yes, that information is important somehow.

And if you are sakai like me, there is this hut thingy where we only have to climb the stairs and slide onto the seat.

Maybe it’s just me, but I got a little nervous sitting on that seat. There was no safety belt and I keep imagining the elephant would run amok and we’ll end up falling with the elephant squashing me to death. Yes, I have a very wild imagination.

While walking to the hut to pick us up, the elephant pooped. A big one. Our elephant’s name is Dao Thong (I think) which means No Gentle. That is not comforting.

We went to the nearby area where we had to cross a river, and hilly side. I am amazed how the elephant manage to balance herself.

I guess she was hungry as she makes a lot of stop to feed herself with leaves and tree barks. She farted too and the smell, OMG the smell was pretty bad.

True to her name, she has a mind of her own and wanted to climb the almost 70 degree hill. *heart attack*

There wasn’t much to see except for the batik lizard we saw on the trees. Oh, and how she uses her trunk to knock down a small tree because she wants to eat it.

So after a while, we finally went back. We get to feed her with bananas and pineapple. Macam vacuum her trunk. We also get to see another elephant shower and them eating the lunch.

Most of the elephants would take the whole stalk of plant and smash it on the ground, hoping it will separate into smaller pieces. The male elephant was smart. He actually stepped on the plant and uses his trunk to tear the leaves apart. *claps hand*

I am pretty sure if you guys take the elephant and jungle trekking you would have a more awesome experience. I am done with the elephant ride though. It was fun, but I rather spend my time enjoying the sun.

Krabi ep4

One MUST DO activity at Krabi is of course, the island trip. Even if you don’t swim, go for the one of the many available island trips. Every time I thought the view was superb, I was surprised with a more magnificent one.

Krabi is blessed indeed.

There are PLENTY of tour agents around Ao Nang but Sam, the Manager of Aloha Inn recommended the Barracudas Tour which is like 2 minutes walk from the B&B.

The ladies at the outlet were friendly and explain to us the many available packages. There were 4 Island Tour, 5 Island Tour, Sunset Tour, Phi Phi Island Tour and if that is not plenty enough, you can also choose to take the speed boat or the long tail boat.

Long tail boat eh? Sounds really exotic no?

So I decided to go for the 4 Islands on a long boat tail. We have speedboats in KK thank you very much. The whole booking took us less than 5 minutes and the nice lady even gave me us a special discount.

The next morning, we gathered at the outlet at 8am sharp and we were introduced to our guide.

I don’t remember his name now but he is very funny and speaks pretty good English.

Oh, there were plenty of good looking men waiting outside the outlet, but to mine and my sister’s disappointment, we ended up in a boat where the only two men who were “women-less” that day were *ahem* more than just friends.

Our guide, let’s call him Shell Boobs Boy, details later, ushered everyone across the street onto this small lorry. We settled down nicely only to be told, that’s not our ride. *hee*

We finally arrived at the jetty which is not a jetty if you ask me. It was the river bank and we had to cross the water to get onto our boat. And because of all the boats were parked in that area, let’s just say the water wasn’t the cleanest. But you know what; when you’re in Ao Nang, do what the Ao Nang people do. No complain. No fuss.

I jokingly pointed to my sister the sad looking boat and just our luck; it was our long tail boat. It didn’t looked like it will survive the tiniest wave, but I was assured that the boat is strong and it was made without a single nail. Great way to make me feel safe *sarcastic two thumbs up*

So we walked in the water to our boat and “haul” ourselves over board. Oh, don’t worry there was this steel staircase you could climb, but depending on the water level, it could be a little tricky to take the first step up and the last step down. I climbed like a carefree monkey and slide down the boat like a gentle Dugong.

One great tip; DON’T SIT TOO FAR BEHIND, especially next to the motor because it is loud and you don’t get the best photo angle.

I cannot remember the names of the islands because I couldn’t hear a thing what the Shell Boobs Boy said over the loud motor, and their Thai names are confusing for me. Ooh, but I remember Chicken Island, because well it’s an island shaped like a chicken.

The trip was definitely worth it. The turquoise water and the stunning island formation were breathtaking. However, it can get a little tiring and somewhat restless after a couple of hours especially with the not so comfortable seating, so it is important to make sure you get enough room to be able to change your seating position once in a while.

This is important too because my sister and I ended up with sunburn on one arm only!

Lunch is provided but you may want to pack something to munch though most of the island we stopped by have the “floating cafes”. Oh, though they do provide drinking water, but it’s best to bring some your own; either to wash the salty sea water after a dip, or to dehydrate because boy, the heat can be unbearable.

planning Cambodia

One tip when booking your flight to Cambodia, it is best to arrive at Phnom Penh and depart from Siem Reap or vice versa. When we were doing our booking, my sister only told me to book to Angkor Wat and Angkor Wat was not in one of the destination.

Yes, I am ignorant like that.

I would usually find info on the world wide web, but for some reason, I didn’t and I end up buying the return tickets to Phnom Penh. I mean, it’s the capital city so surely there’s plenty of things to do.

True, but it is not Angkor Wat.

So now I have to figure out our ‘adventure’ to travel to Siem Reap and back to Phnom Penh in four days. *woohoo* Each trip takes about 5 hours but I was assured it would be worth it.

I am sure it would.

By the way, anyone knows a wishing well or a somewhere to make dreams/wishes come true? Hee. It’s for a friend I assure you. But kalau ada, saya pun mau juga. *LOL*

It’s a Sunday afternoon. I SHOULD be chillin’ and enjoying the day off before the new twist to the drama tomorrow, but I am agitated. I have been this way for many weeks now. I call it the June Bug. For some reason I really get depressed around this time of the year.

However, this time I am not alone. *evil laugh* I know it’s a rather mean thing to say, but it’s comforting to know that I am not the only one feeling like in a rut; that I want a new change. Like moving to a foreign country. Or simply leave my job to travel the world. You know, something exciting.

But it is not that simple. I cannot just pack my bags and take Ekiel with me to face something that is not certain nor can I leave him behind and expect my family to be okay with it.

I am not complaining, I am just saying it is not the right thing to do. At this moment.

This is adulthood no? To be sensible and responsible is most time a pain in the arse.

Que sera sera.

Plenty of things are happening for the next two months! First up is the Amateur Open, then the re-launch of the North Borneo Railway (yes finally!!!), the Labuan adventure, then the 11^th Sutera Harbour 7K Sunset Charity Run 2011, then the SH Merdeka Month Launching, then my Cambodia trip *woohoo*, then the SH Berbuka Puasa, then the ‘conquering the mountain’ and finally the Hari Raya/Merdeka holiday.

Yes, I also ask myself why I am still bored.

But my alasan is, susah bah mau blog without your own computer. I have to wait for everyone and that usually is forever. I cannot blog in the office because I was told I am not supposed to be smiling to myself when I am in front of the PC.

Krabi ep3

After we checked-in, our first itinerary was to go to Krabi Town Walking Street Night Market. We found some blogs who recommended a must visit. I must admit it was the food, the mouth watering food photos that got us so determined to find our way to town.

Everyone in Krabi is friendly (except for some shop people) and speaks English so getting around was easy. We asked for direction and we were told to cross the road and wait for the transport. We were not sure what sort of ‘transport’ we were supposed to wait, but you cannot miss the ‘songtaew’ (similar to jeepney in Manila) to Krabi town. There were signage and one of the passengers in the ‘songtaew’ also “asked” us “Krabi Town?” Hee.

A one way trip is 60BHT (RM6) and it took us about 30 minutes or so to reach Krabi Town. We weren’t sure where to stop and again the nice passengers told us where to stop, where to go and where and what time to find the last ‘songteaw’ to go back to Ao Nang. Such nice people.

We got there around 4.30pm and everyone was just starting to set up their stalls. We decided to wonder around the shopping malls/shop lots first.

The shopping mall is actually a departmental store called Vogue Department. The prices were a bit expensive so we continued to wonder outside when we saw a staircase going to the basement of the store. We were not sure what it is, but to our nice surprise, there were plenty of smaller stalls selling clothes and everything else at reasonable prices.

Reasonable means, I managed to find a nice 3/4 pants for only RM19. My sister got herself a cool gladiator flats for RM19 as well. *woohoo*

I wanted the flats but the sizes were too small. Me and my big feet dilemma *sighs*

The night market is a showcase of colorful local cuisines, handicrafts and clothing as well.

One of the popular handicraft stall is the “flower soap”. I am pretty sure it is more for decoration purposes, but even the locals were buying it. The lady sits on the road and carved the soap into delicate flowers. The “flower soap” looks beautiful and there were a few flowers that were practically “glowing”. It is available for 100BHT (RM10).

I don’t know where to start when it comes to the yummilicious food. There were PLENTY to choose from and we were so tempted to try everything BUT to waste food is not an option. So we decided to walk one round before deciding what to get.

Everything was so good; I sometime crave for the Prawn Omelet. I seriously do. The girl who cooked the wonderful omelet doesn’t speak English. When she realized I do not know Thai, she went out with the sweetest smile from her counter to look at the photo of the dish I was pointing.

In the middle of the night market area are tables and chairs where visitors could sit and enjoy their meals. There was also one of those inflatable playgrounds for children with the local music blasting on the speakers.

Then something interesting happened. At around 6pm, everyone stood up. Those walking stood still. For a while, I thought something happened when I finally figured out that it was the country’s national anthem.

I tried to google it for more information, and what I got is this:

“United Thais – Strong Thailand” with the intention to promote unity and patriotism. Thai people normally sing or at least stand for the national anthem twice a day at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

A visit to the Krabi Town Walking Street Night Market is a must. It offers something local and different from the scenes at Ao Nang. The night market is only open from Friday to Sunday, 5pm to 10pm.

We found Aloha Inn through TripAdvisor. There was nothing but good reviews about the place, so we thought hey why not. The price was very reasonable and when we saw that the B&B is only a 3-minute walk from the beach, we were sold!

The booking is so easy. Not long after we confirmed our booking, the owner of the B&B personally emailed us to confirm our reservation and offer their assistance with anything we need. Which we did. We asked lots and lots of question up to a point they got confused because of our very similar names. *LOL* In the end, he replied to both of us and reconfirmed whose name should be on the card when during arrival at the airport.

We checked-in into their “penthouse” because we *ahem* deserved it. The room was huge with a king-sized bed. True to its name, the décor is very much “Hawaiian” but that only gives the whole place character. I especially like the batik lizard placed at the edge of bed.

For a while, I really thought Krabi lizards were that big!

There was a balcony but the view isn’t the greatest. We were facing some kitchen but it was already mentioned in their website, so we didn’t really care.

Besides, who wants to spend their time on the balcony?

Nightlife in Krabi is almost non-existent so the B&B provided lots of DVDs for our viewing pleasure, which was great because the local channels are all in Thai. Even the western movies were dubbed in Thai language which was super weird.

They have different types of room available, all at very cheap prices. I prefer a simple and clean B&B compared to resorts and hotels because first, I cannot afford them. Secondly, even if I can afford them, I think it’s a waste as you only spend little time in the room. Unless you don’t plan to come out larr. *winks*

B&Bs also offer a more personal touch. When was the last time you sit and chat with the owner/manager of the Inn? They are always the best person to talk to about the place, where to go and what to do and we had plenty to ask.

This is also one of the reasons why we are going back to the same inn for our next trip! *woohoo*

Krabi ep1

We arrived in Krabi airport in the afternoon and we immediately queue up for the immigration process which took FOREVER. Yes, it felt that long. There was only two counter available and because we took our sweet time to come out from the plane, my sister and I were among the last few.

The immigration guy wasn’t so friendly and he actually tossed my passport on the counter after he finished doing whatever it is they do. When I opened to check, I was pissed to see the blue ink on my profile page. Macam kena cancel my passport ni. I know it was an accident, but he could at least apologize for it.

A travelling friend was supposed to come for the trip but that person did not even bother to neither show up nor call us to inform that he is not coming. When my sister called, a little girl picked up the call and claimed that he accidently left the mobile in the kampong and he already left for the city. WTH?

He’s so lucky I do not know him.

Because of that person, we arranged for airport transfer from the hotel because it would cost us more or less the same if we took the bus. Taking the cab to Ao Nang is 600THB (RM60), and the bus is at 150THB (RM15) per person.

It took us about 40 minutes to go through immigration, but Sam, the hotel manager where we were staying, waited for us patiently.

The drive to Ao Nang was about 40 minutes or so. If it weren’t for the signboards, I would think were we still in Sabah, except for the many hills along the drive.

For some reason, I’ve always thought Krabi is an island. *head hangs in shame*

I was kinda disappointed to see what I see but all that changed once we turned to Ao Nang Beach. *woohoo*

Ao Nang beach is a long stretch of U-shaped road with hotels, restaurant, tour agency and stalls selling almost everything a tourist would need. Facing the shop houses is the beautiful beach. I thought the view was *wow* but trust me when I say the view just keep getting better.
